OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
SANTA ANA VALLEY FALCONS
Coach: Larry Mohr
Last season: 5-5 overall, 2-3 league
Scouting report: This will be Coach Larry Mohr’s ninth season with the Falcons, and he can’t remember having a team with more speed. “We are talented, too, and we have a huge O line,” Mohr added. The Falcons’ offensive line is anchored by junior Chuy Garcia and senior Alexis Leon, a pair of 300-pound tackles. The Falcons’ talent shows through at the skill positions, especially receiver. Sherman Thomas, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior who began his football career at Edison, will make his varsity debut with the Falcons. Mohr called him a potential game-changer. Edward Cabrera caught 19 passes for 200 yards and two TDs last season. Oscar Sanchez figures to be the strength of the defense, literally. The 6-1, 240 pound middle linebacker can bench 320 pounds and squat 450.
Bottom line: The Falcons are a threat to win the league championship, but they are young, and not even Mohr knows what to expect this season.
Players to watch: Yaverny Bedolla, RB, Sr.; Chris Hernandez, RB, Jr.; Erik Lares, QB, Jr.; Malcolm Wesley, RB/WR, So.
