ROWLAND HEIGHTS – Fairmont Prep never quit, but a slow start combined with missed opportunities were too much to overcome in a 30-21 loss to Southlands Christian in a San Joaquin League on Friday night.

The Eagles (6-3 overall, 2-2 league) scored on the first possession of the game to grab an 8-0 lead, but Fairmont Prep quarterback Darwyn Gines responded with a 38-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 8-7.

The Huskies defense forced a turnover on downs, but the offense was unable to turn it into points. Southlands then scored three consecutive touchdowns to build a 30-7 lead by halftime.

Fairmont (3-7, 0-4) got its running game going in the second half.

After recovering a muffed punt, the Huskies (3-7, 0-4) marched 61 yards on a 14-play drive that consumed 6:55 and ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Gines to Kiki Mendoza on fourth-and-goal.

Fairmont then recovered an onside kick and the offense went back to work. This time the Huskies held the ball for 5:24, but eventually turned it over on downs at the Southlands 10-yard line. That was the third Fairmont possession that ended at or inside the Eagles’ 10.

Gines finished with 138 yards passing and 75 yards rushing and had a hand in each of Fairmont’s touchdowns.
