HUNTINGTON BEACH – Edison’s offense is at full-throttle early in the football season.
The No. 9 Chargers rattled off 21 consecutive points in the second half, and Edison rallied to beat Tesoro, 31-14, on Saturday in a nonleague game at Huntington Beach High.
Edison (2-0), which suffered a 19-point defeat at Tesoro last year, have scored 87 points through their first two games.
Griffin O’Connor threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns, and Shaun Colamonico had seven catches for 82 yards and two scores.
Tesoro (0-1) took a 14-10 lead on a 29-yard touchdown catch by Shane Coleman (115 receiving yards) to start the third.
Edison answered in a hurry. McCade Barrett returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards, and Jack Carmichael walked it in from 5 yards out two plays later.
“I thought it was a really good response that we had,” Chargers coach Dave White said. “Obviously, the kickoff return kind of got us going a little bit.”
Colamonico broke open over the middle for a 19-yard score that put Edison up, 24-14, on its next drive.
O’Connor scored on a quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter.
Tesoro is starting the season without transfer quarterbacks Chase Petersen and Aaron Angelos.
Looking to make the most of his head start in that position battle, Hunter Cifuentes went 9 of 15 for 113 yards in the first half. Most impressively, two of his completions helped the Titans move the chains on fourth down.
Tesoro was 0 for 4 on third down, but 2 for 2 on fourth down in the first half.
A conversion on fourth-and-5 to Graeden Sharpe led to a touchdown drive for the Titans. Coleman outleapt his defender near the front right pylon on a 10-yard score.
That made it 10-7 Edison early in the second quarter. It remained so going into halftime.
Gavin Chambers had two sacks, and Jacob Nowland had an interception for the Titans.
