Jake Moss scored out of a timeout play just before the buzzer as Edison’s boys water polo team stayed hot Tuesday with an 18-17 victory at previously county-ranked Santa Margarita.

Edison coach Diggy Riley called timeout with five seconds left in fourth period and the score locked, 17-17. The Chargers lined up all six of their field players at the 5-meter line and ran a pick play for Moss, whose shot bounced off the side-post and in off the goalie’s head just before the final buzzer.

“Never seen that in all my years of playing and coaching. Bar, head-in to win it,” Riley said in a text message of Moss’ winning strike. “Crazy.”

Moss finished with five goals and six assists.

Alex Nathan scored seven goals and added three assists for Edison (12-7), which defeated then-No. 8 Capistrano Valley, 12-11, over the weekend at the Villa Park Classic.
