The CIF State Federated Council earlier this month approved the creation of Southern and Northern regional water polo championships for boys and girls, Brian Seymour, senior director for CIF State, confirmed Friday.

The Central Section proposed the championships, which will begin next school year in the fall and winter. The Southern Section was one of two sections in the state to vote against the championships but the other eight sections voted to approve.

The week-long tournaments will be played after the section finals.

The Southern boys tournament, featuring two eight-team divisions from teams from the Southern, San Diego and L.A. sections, will be played Nov. 18, 2017.

The Southern girls tournament will also feature two eight-team divisions and will be March 3, 2018. The tournament will be Southern, San Diego and L.A. sections.

Seymour said each section would determine its representatives.

To accommodate the regional games, the Southern Section boys and girls seasons will begin earlier next school year.

There are no state tournaments in boys and girls water polo but state swim and diving championships were introduced two years ago. Crean Lutheran and JSerra’s girls have claimed state titles the past two seasons at the meet hosted by Clovis West.
