Wayne Carlson, who led El Dorado’s girls basketball team to consecutive CIF-SS championship appearances, announced his retirement.

“I have had (the head coaching) position for 18 years, and during that time I have been blessed to have great student-athletes and the support of faculty, administration, and parents,” Carlson said. “I have met so many good friends among the coaches and officials in Orange County and the most important thing are those relationships.”

El Dorado qualified for the playoffs in all 18 of Carlson’s seasons, advancing to the semifinals seven times and finishing as CIF runners-up the past two seasons.

Carlson was named the CIF-SS Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2015. He was the Register’s coach of the year in 2013.
