Nearly all of the events for the CIF State Track and Field Championships this weekend in Clovis were moved to later start times because of the extreme heat that is expected in the area.
Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 105 degrees on Friday and 108 on Saturday.
The changes pushed back the start times of all events. For the prelims on Friday, running events will begin at 6:15 p.m. and field events at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the championship running heats will start at 7 p.m. and field events at 6 p.m.
Dana Hills distance coach Tim Butler was in favor of the changes.
“I think that moving it to an hour later would be advantageous for most kids,” he said. “When you get to one of those events like the 200, 400, and so on, those are the events that the heat is going to affect more than all the others.”
Orange County will have 12 athletes in races that are 800 meters in length or longer. Tesoro’s Amanda Gehrich is scheduled to compete in the 1,600 and 3,200.

At San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino: Division 4, Laguna Beach vs. Kaiser of Fontana, 10 a.m.; Division 3, Redondo Union vs. Woodbridge, 1 p.m.; Division 2, South Hills of West Covina vs. Redlands East Valley, 4 p.m.; Division 1, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City vs. Murrieta Mesa, 7 p.m..
At UC Riverside: Division 7, Excelsior Charter vs. Academy of Academic Excellence, noon; Division 6, Sage Hill vs. Crean Lutheran, 3:30 p.m.; Division 7, Woodcrest Christian vs. Cantwell Sacred Heart of Montebello.
SOFTBALL FINALS
The CIF-SS announced the dates and times for the softball championship games.
All of the games will be played at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.
Friday: Division 7, Rolling Hills Prep vs. Faith Baptist, 2 p.m.; Division 3, Grand Terrace vs. Redondo Union, 4:30 p.m.; Division 2, Valley View of Moreno Valley vs. Mission Viejo, 7 p.m.
Saturday: Division 4, Torrance vs. North Torrance, 10 a.m.; Division 6, Paraclete of Lancaster vs. Savanna, 12:30 p.m.; Division 5, Lompoc vs. Louisville of Woodland Hills, 3:30 p.m.; Division 1, Mater Dei vs. Orange Lutheran, 6 p.m.
