2008 All-County Boys Cross Country Selections

FIRST TEAM

Tyler Valdes

Dana Hills, Sr.

James Cameron

Mission Viejo, Sr.

He was one of the best runners in the state. Cameron won the Division I title at the Central Park Invitational for the second year in a row, and tied for the South Coast League title. Finished second in the sweepstakes race at the O.C. Championships, third at the CIF-SS Division I Finals and sixth at the Division I state meet.

John Carrell

La Quinta, Sr.

The talented senior joined the county’s elite with a stellar campaign. He won his second consecutive Garden Grove League title. He finished second in the Division II race at the O.C. Championships (eighth best time overall). Finished fifth at the CIF-SS Division III finals and 12th in Division III at the state meet.

Jose Gutierrez

Valencia, Sr.

He established himself as one of the county’s best runners at the O.C. Championships, finishing fifth overall in the sweepstakes race. Finished 13th at the Division II Finals, second best among all county runners in the division, and he qualified for the state meet for the fourth time.

Zak Phillips

Dana Hills, Sr.

Was a big reason the Dolphins won their second state title in a row. Philips was seventh in the sweepstakes race at the O.C. Championships, fourth at the South Coast League finals, 15th at the CIF-SS Division I finals and 20th at the CIF Division I state finals.

Matt McElroy

Edison, Jr.

He enjoyed a banner season, winning the large schools race at the Clovis Invitational and finishing third in the sweepstakes race at the O.C. Championships. The junior went on to capture the Sunset League title, finished second at the CIF-SS Division II finals, and fifth at the Division II state finals.

Ryan Valdes

Dana Hills, Sr.

The senior was consistently one of the county’s better runners. He finished fourth in the sweepstakes race at the O.C. Championships, third at the South Coast League Finals, 12th at the CIF-SS Division I finals and 14th at the Division I state finals.

Toby Villalva

El Toro, Sr.

He helped guide the Chargers to the state meet with a superb season. Finished with the ninth-best time of all seniors at the Woodbridge Invitational. Won the Sea View League title, placed 18th at the CIF-SS Division I finals, and finished ninth at the Division I state finals.
