Some things are worth waiting for.

Girls soccer fans didn’t have to wait long for a rematch of the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals. The first game ended in golden-goal overtime, and nine days later, Act Two did not disappoint.

Hailey Zerbel provided the winner in the 84th minute as top-seeded South Hills of West Covina broke the hearts of El Dorado’s players for a second time, 2-1, in the Division III semifinals of the CIF Southern California Regionals at Covina District Field.

“We were really nervous going into this game because we already faced them in the semifinals,” Zerbel said about facing the Golden Hawks. “Everyone was so excited, but we were scared because we knew that they were going to throw the best that they possibly could at us.”

The game was a battle of field position. The Golden Hawks, led by the efforts of Daria Petredes and Christiane Sundstrum, kept the Huskies (25-1-5) pinned with their possession-oriented passing.

That ability to keep plays alive allowed El Dorado (16-10-5) to tie the score, 1-1, in the 27th minute. Lauren Bethencourt got a touch on Hannah Alfaro’s free kick, and the second-effort shot by Haley Johnson got past South Hills goalie Alyssa Lopez (three saves).

Amber Marinero scored for South Hills in the 13th minute, finding the net off a cross from Skylar Robledo.

“Congratulations to our opponent South Hills,” Golden Hawks coach Kyle Thomas said. “Wonderful team. Two great battles.”

The loss ended the Golden Hawks’ farthest push into the postseason.

“We went from a season three years ago in which we had one win (in league) to getting all the way to the CIF semifinals this year,” Thomas added. “We did that as a group, and I could not be more proud of them.”

The win sets up a rematch between the Eagles and Tesoro in the Division I final on Saturday. The match will be held at Santiago Canyon College at 3 p.m. Santa Margarita beat Tesoro this past Saturday in the CIF-SS Division 1 final.
