Sunny Hills, Godinez earn top seeds for SoCal soccer regionals
A day after winning the CIF-SS Division 2 and 4 championships, Sunny Hills and Godinez earned No. 1 seeds for the So Cal boys soccer regionals when CIF State officials released the eight-team brackets on Sunday.
The Lancers(20-3-4) will open the Division 2 regionals with La Costa Canyon (15-6-4), and La Jolla (7-8-5) will play the Grizzlies (21-1-4) in Division 4. Both games will begin at 4 p.m. The site for the Godinez game still has to be determined. But Sunny Hills will be on the road despite being the No. 1 seed because the school's field doesn't have lights and the Sunny Hills officials couldn't secure another field, Sunny Hills coach Mike Schade said.
Santa Ana is seeded seventh in the division and if both the Lancers and Saints win their two games this week, they could meet in the regional championship on Saturday. It would be a rematch of the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinal, which the Lancers won, 1-0.
The Saints open the regionals with second-seeded Torrey Pines.
On Friday, Garden Grove also won a Southern Section championship, beating Garden Grove League rival Santiago on penalty kicks in the Division 5 final, but the Argonauts earned the No.2 in the Division 4 regional and will play McLane from Fresno. The Cavaliers could potentially meet the Argos in the regional championship as Santiago is seeded sixth. First, the Cavaliers will have to get past Fremont of Los Angeles in the first round on Tuesday.
Saddleback Valley Christian, Santiago and Los Alamitos also earned a place in the regionals. The Griffins, which lost to Santa Barbara in overtime in a CIF-SS Division 1 semifinal, is the No. 6 seed in the D1 regional bracket and will play third-seeded Buchanan of Clovis.
The Warriors, which lost 5-1 to Fillmore in the CIF-SS Division 7 championship match, are seeded sixth in the Division 5 regional bracket and will open the three-round tournament with third-seeded Shadow Hills of Indio.
