For finishing 16-0, winning CIF-SS West Valley Division and Division 1AA CIF State titles and keeping up a 28-game win streak, the Mission Viejo football team was honored with an Army National Guard National ranking trophy by MaxPreps in an on-campus ceremony on Jan. 22.
The Diablos received the award for being ranked among the top 50 teams in the nation. MaxPreps, which is operated by CBS, is making stops at all 50 schools to present trophies for the achievement.
This year’s Mission Viejo team went undefeated en route to a second consecutive division title after beating Vista Murrieta, 21-14, on the road in the title game.
The Diablos were then given a berth in the Division 1AA state title bracket, where they beat Helix, 32-28, at home before winning the state title with a dominant 24-0 effort over Bellarmine Prep at Sacramento State.
Quarterback Brock Johnson was named CIF West Valley Division MVP and the Register’s Football Player of the Year.
Brenden Schooler was named West Valley Division Defensive Player of the Year and Bob Johnson was named the division’s Coach of the Year.
In addition, 10 others were named to the West Valley Division’s All-CIF team.
