Winning consecutive titles in the CIF-SS Division 1AA girls volleyball playoffs hasn’t happened since 1998-99.

Redondo Union will attempt to accomplish the feat this year, but as has been proved all year long, the field chasing the champions, is as capable of making a run to the final as well.

Pairings for the CIF-SS championships were released Friday.

“I think it will be interesting,” Santa Margarita coach Katy Daly said. “I don’t think there is a team this year that’s 100 percent going to win it.

“Every team has lost to teams. I think every team in the (CIF) top 10 has a chance to take home that ring. In the second round, you’re still going to see teams that can fire up and knock off someone. I think it is going to be really exciting to see this year.”

Great Oak of Temecula is the second seed, followed by Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach and Santa Margarita.

One of those teams in the hunt is Mater Dei. The Monarchs have advanced to second consecutive CIF finals, but have come up short both times, losing to Los Alamitos in 2013 and Redondo Union last year.

Northwood (Pacific Coast League) and Orange Lutheran (Trinity League) received at-large berths into the Division 1AA playoffs. Both teams finished fourth in their respective leagues, but had an overall record above .500.

Trabuco Hills and Aliso Niguel finished tied for the Sea View League title. The Mustangs are the third overall seed in Division 1A with the Wolverines receiving the No. 4 seed. Both have first-round home matches Tuesday.

Esperanza is the third seed in Division 2AA. St. Margaret’s is the second seed in Division 3AA and has a first-round bye. Sage Hill is the fourth seed.

Saddleback Valley Christian (Division 3A) is the only county school ranked No. 1 in a division. SVC is in search of its third consecutive CIF title, having won the 4AA title in 2013 and the 3A title last year. The Warriors will begin the playoffs at home against Ramona of Riverside.

Express League champion Tarbut V’Torah is the top seed in Division 5A.

There are two wild-card matches set for tonight, but no county teams are involved.

Second-round matches are set for Thursday, followed by quarterfinals Saturday and semifinals, Nov. 17. The finals are set for Nov. 20-21.

Aliso Niguel (1A) and Sage Hill (3AA) also earned CIF titles last year.
