WALNUT – In recent years, few teams have attacked the daunting hills of the Mt. San Antonio College cross country course quite like Brea Olinda’s boys.

The second-ranked Wildcats rolled past Baldwin Park, 44-99, Friday night in the 68th running of the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Senior Austin Tamagno finished first in 14:36 to lead Brea to its third consecutive Division 3 title at the two-day meet that concluded Saturday. Gio Orellana placed eighth, and Kevin McNulty was 10th.

Brea’s team time of 1:17:39 was the program’s second fastest recorded at the course. The quickest came at the CIF-SS Finals last year. That Wildcats team went on to win the program’s first state championship.

Wildcats coach Matt Rainwater said he looks at the meet as a precursor to the state field. Friday’s results gave him reason to believe that Brea will see continued success on the course when it pursues a third straight CIF-SS Division 3 title next month.

“I think the kids ran really well,” Rainwater said. “We’ve got to show up on the day that it matters. We’re right on track for where we need to be.”

Rainwater doesn’t want his team to be taken by surprise in the postseason. He warned that, despite his team’s dominance, dangerous teams are out there.

“You never discount Palos Verdes, no matter what,” he said. “It’s California after all, so it’s anybody’s race. We’re not going to underestimate any team.”

Palos Verdes finished third with 165 points.

A bit of individual history was at stake for Tamagno this weekend. Tamagno set the course record of 14:23 as a junior. Although he did not threaten his own mark, it was on the line in the combined Division 1 & 2 Sweepstakes on Saturday morning.

Arcadia’s Phillip Rocha won the race in 14:24, coming close to a share of course glory. Rocha said he had an internal clock working as he chased the record.

“I was on pace to break the record by about six seconds at the two-mile (mark),” he said. “Going out, setting the pace, and breaking the wind for everyone just took its toll on me for the last mile.”

The county had several individual standouts in the meet. Canyon’s Nikki Zielinski and Dylan Scarsone, and Dana Hills’ Jake Ogden and Mason Coppi had top-10 finishes in their Division 1 & 2 combined sweepstakes.

Other notables included Esperanza’s Shannon Mac Kellar (fifth) in Division 3, JSerra’s Andrew Burkhardt (second) in Division 4, and Sage Hill’s Emma Dickerson (third) in Division 5.

El Toro’s Michael Biedebach and Tesoro’s Carter Christman added top-10 performances in the Division 1 & 2 individual sweepstakes.
