Tesoro’s boys basketball season did not end Tuesday when the Titans lost to Canyon in the CIF-Southern Section semifinals.
The Titans will play in the state tournament. When teams, seedings and first-round pairings for the CIF Southern California Regionals, the qualifying tournament for the CIF State championships, were announced Sunday, Tesoro was included.
Tesoro will play at La Costa Canyon in the first round of the Division 2 bracket of the Southern California Regionals on Wednesday. Tesoro is seeded No. 16 in the 16-team field. La Costa Canyon is seeded No. 1.
The first round of the CIF Southern California Regionals in divisions 1-5 is Wednesday. The Regionals Open Division first round is Friday. Second-round games in divisions 1-5 are Saturday. The Open Division does not have a second round; all divisions’ semifinals are March 17.
CIF Southern California Regionals finals are March 21 at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid. Southern California Regionals champions play CIF Northern California Regionals champions March 27 and 28 at Cal.
Canyon, which made one of the more amazing, if not the most amazing, comebacks in Orange County high school sports history Saturday in a double-overtime win over Lawndale in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2AA championship game, plays at home against Kearney of San Diego in a Division 2 first-round game Wednesday. Canyon is seeded No. 2, Kearney is No. 15.
Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran were semifinals losers in the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs. By winning first-round Open Division games, Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran qualified for the state tournament. Mater Dei will be home in the Regionals Open Division first round Friday against Westchester. Orange Lutheran is at Fairfax on Friday.
Lutheran is seeded No. 7, Fairfax is No. 2. Mater Dei is seeded No. 4, Westchester No. 5.
Foothill, which won the CIF-SS 1A championship, plays at Torrey Pines in a Regionals Division 1 first-round game Wednesday.
CIF-SS Divsion 3AA champion Sonora is home against Valhalla of El Cajon in a Division 3 first-round game Wednesday. Corona del Mar, runnerup in CIF-SS Division 3A, is at El Cajon Valley in a Division 3 first-round game Wednesday.
CIF-SS Division 6 champion Orangewood Academy is home against Caruthers in a Regionals Division 5 first-round game Wednesday.
