Garen Balikoiogla scored in the 70th minute with a powerful blast from 30 yards out, and goalkeeper Tiago Costa withstood a barrage of shots early in the game as visiting Edison defeated Corona, 1-0, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 1 boys soccer playoffs.

By winning, the Chargers (14-7-2) advance to the semifinals. They will be at El Toro on Tuesday.

Costa made his first start of the season Friday in place of Brendon Fix, who was out sick.

“He definitely didn’t have time to build up confidence,” said Edison coach Charlie Brenman. “But he’s a good goalkeeper and he stepped up huge for us today.”

Corona (13-8-6) dominated play in the first half, keeping possession for nearly the entire half.

But in the 70th minute, Balikoiogla exchanged passes with two teammates, got the ball back some 30 yards out and blasted a low line drive at the far post. The ball caromed off the post, past Corona’s goalkeeper and into the goal.

The Panthers outshot Edison, 15-5.
