Breaking down the Division 1A bracket for the girls basketball playoffs:
DIVISION 1A
Top four seeds: Burroughs/Burbank, Troy, Foothill, West Torrance
County representatives: Westminster, El Toro, Valencia, Huntington Beach, Cypress, Foothill, Segerstrom, Edison, Beckman, Katella, Troy
Rapid reaction: After Division 3AA, this is the most represented county division in the playoffs.
The way the bracket has been constructed, all signs point to a potential showdown between Troy and Foothill in the semifinals, which would make for one of the best county vs. county matchups. The Knights and the Warriors both get after it defensively, pressing teams baseline to baseline, so look for a lower scoring game if that’s the case.
As happy (and surprised) as Troy coach Roger Anderson was on Friday after not being selected for the Open Division, he knew the 1A bracket was still no joke and it was still going to be a battle to advance to the finale. If the Warriors can stay healthy, though, this is a team that could’ve very well competed and won a couple games in the Open Division.
West Torrance and Burroughs are both contenders to steal the crown in the top half of the bracket. Look for one of those two schools to play the winner of Troy-Foothill in the finale.
