The CIF State office today announced the elimination of the regionals round in the Open Division of the CIF State football championships.

Regional rounds will continue in divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the state football playoffs.

CIF State spokesman Rebecca Brutlag said the CIF State Football Advisory Committee and the state’s 10 section commissioners agreed to end the regionals round in the Open Division. The decision was made, Brutlag said, so that a selection committee would choose the Open Division representatives from the north and south and place them in the Open Division championship game. The creation of the open division was intended so that a committee would make a simple selection of the two best teams, she said.

The change is effective this football season.

In last year’s Open Division regional round, St. John Bosco defeated Centennial of Corona, 70-49 in the South. De La Salle of Concord defeated Folsom, 45-17, in the North. St. John Bosco beat De La Salle, 20-14, in the Open Division state final.

In 2012, Centennial of Corona and De La Salle won Open Division regional games to meet in the final in which De La Salle beat Centennial, 48-28.
