Saturday was an action-packed day at the CIF-SS Track and Field Finals. So much action that it couldn’t all fit within the print story.

Here is where we’ll look at some of the other notable performances from the meet, and we’ll break it down by division, starting with Divisions 3 and 4 in this post. Divisions 1 and 2 will be noted in a later post.

DIVISION 4

St. Margaret’s Lara Ohanesian won the girls discus with a throw of 120-01. Ohanesian’s two other best throws were 115-11 and 109-04.

Sage Hill’s C.J. McCord took home a title in boys high jump with a clearance of 6-07. McCord is still tied for the county lead in the event with a previous jump of 6-09 this season.

DIVISION 3

Brea Olinda’s Austin Tamagno had quite the day. First, he pushed himself down the stretch and took the lead from El Modena’s Sydney Gidabuday in the boys 1,600 to win the championship in 4:09.95.

“I kind of looked at him, and I could tell he was just as tired as (I was),” Tamagno said. “I could hear him going like, ‘Oh shoot, here’s Austin.’ So I was like you know what, let’s go for it (the win). My goal is trying to win it, and I did.”

Tamagno won the CIF title after finishing second in the event last season.

“It was a goal of mine the whole year,” Tamagno said. “I feel really, really good right now. I crossed the line and felt all this happiness and joy come through my body.”

Tamagno also took home the boys 3,200 title in 9:04.92. That was the fastest time of the day, and will make him the No. 1 seed at the CIF Master’s meet next week.

Santa Margarita’s Austin Tinsley performed well. Tinsley is getting his confidence back up after suffering a knee injury midway through this season, and a CIF title will most certainly add to his belief.

Tinsley’s time of 37.75 in the boys 300-meter hurdles is indactive of how he was running earlier in the season, and it was good enough to give him the division title.

The Eagles senior finished second in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a 14.55.

Irvine’s Rai Ahmed-Green won the girls 400 championship with her run of 56.85. She finished third with a 24.87 in the 200.

Corona del Mar’s Matt Hurst ran a season-best time in the 400 of 48.03 to earn the title of division champion.

Costa Mesa’s Quinton Bell ran a wind-aided 10.63 in the 100, which was good enough for second. Bell also finished second in the 200 with a wind-legal 21.34.

Santa Margarita’s Kaitlyn Merritt cleared 13-03 to win the girls pole vault championship. Merritt missed on all three of her attempts at 13-10.

Orange Lutheran got 10 big points from Carl Johansson in boys pole vault after he set a division record with a mark of 16-09.50, but the performance of David Bean can’t be forgotten when thinking of how the Lancers earned a Division 3 title for the second consecutive season.

Bean cleared 15-09 to finish in second and give Orange Lutheran eight more points. Santa Margarita’s Parker Curry came in third, as he cleared 15-03.

JSerra’s Dante Pettis recorded an impressive feat in the boys long jump with a 24-07, second best all-time in the county under all conditions.

“I kind of was (expecting it),” Pettis said. “I’ve been training pretty hard this week. I’ve been working on landing in the pit a lot more … so I was expecting big things, and it happened.”

Esperanza’s William Truong improved his season-best throw of 61-0 in the boys shot put with a throw of 61-07.25. That’s the eight-best throw in California this season.

Truong’s teammate, freshman Bronson Osborn, finished fourth with a throw of 55-03.50. Osborn ranks seventh in the state with a throw of 61-08.50, which he recorded earlier this season.

Osborn and Truong flipped rank in the discus. Osborn finished second with a 159-02. Truong finished fourth with a 157-04.

JSerra’s Luke Wattenberg won the discus crown as he threw 161-11.
