Los Alamitos has hired Brent Danna as its boys water polo and boys swim coach, Griffins athletic director Richard Smith said Wednesday.

Danna also has been hired as a teacher at the Sunset League school.

Danna, a former water polo standout at El Toro, had been hired in early May by his alma mater to guide the Chargers’ teams during the summer with the hopes of landing a teaching position in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

He had been coaching girls water polo at Crescenta Valley, guiding the school to a CIF Division 5 title two seasons ago.

“We’ve very excited to have him,” Smith said of Danna. “It’s exciting to have a person with his qualities and background in coaching.”

As for Danna’s hire as a social science teacher, Smith added, “He won the teaching position.”

Danna replaces Los Alamitos boys water polo coach Jeff Nesmith, who departed for his alma mater, Long Beach Wilson, after one season with the Griffins.
