Cypress wears down El Rancho
ANAHEIM – The Cypress football team cruised to a 35-10 win over El Rancho of Pico Rivera on Saturday at Western High.
The No. 24 Centurions used the combination of an efficient passing game and big plays on the ground to wear down the El Rancho defense.
Cypress quarterback Alex Ashcraft was 13 of 22 for 127 yards and threw two touchdown passes.
The Centurions broke the scoreless tie eight minutes into the game. After an El Rancho turnover on downs, Ashcraft completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Thompson to give Cypress a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing Cypress possession, Cameron Covington scored on an 89-yard fly sweep to put Cypress ahead, 14-0, late in the first quarter.
El Rancho answered by driving down the field to the Cypress 2-yard line. The Centurions’ defense forced a field goal by Fernando Silva to close their lead to 14-3.
The Dons scored again on their next possession. After recovering a Cypress fumble, quarterback Adam Chandler scored on a 1-yard run to cut the Cypress lead to four.
Cypress extended its lead before halftime. Thompson scored on a 1-yard run up the middle to put the Centurions ahead 21-10 at the half.
The Centurions scored within the first minute of the second half. Dominique Thompson returned a squib kick 60 yards to the El Rancho 20-yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Covington scored on another sweep from 13 yards out to put Cypress ahead, 28-10.
