ANAHEIM – Nick Williams made a critical goal-line tackle and Cypress went on to beat visiting Los Amigos, 28-2, on Friday night.

Los Amigos drove 98 yards during an exhausting second-quarter drive right before the senior outside linebacker’s clutch play at the Cypress 1. Los Amigos quarterback Jorge Najera couldn’t gain the few inches needed for a touchdown when Williams executed a saving tackle.

Cypress’ 14-0 lead at that point survived and the momentum flowing for the Lobos was suddenly gone.

“He tried to make a quick cut to beat me, but I read his intention,” Williams said of his big moment.

Such noteworthy defensive action kept happening for the Centurions (1-2) during the nonleague win over Los Amigos (0-2) at Western High. Defensive back Joshua Gutierrez had two interceptions, end Chris Jackson had two sacks and Cypress had nine tackles for losses.

“We strive to be dominant enough where numbers like that aren’t enough,” Williams said.

Running back Jacob Mercado ran 87 yards for a touchdown on Cypress’ first play. He finished with 161 yards on 19 carries.

The Centurions’ halftime lead was extended on Andrew Khiev’s 15-yard scramble early in the third.
