A talented group of 12 junior golfers – including Corona del Mar senior Alyaa Abdulghany – will face their European counterparts in the 10th Junior Ryder Cup, Sept. 26-27, at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn.

The United States Team is comprised of six boys and six girls who are U.S. citizens and graduating high school in 2017, or younger.

The Junior Ryder Cup will consist of six foursomes matches; six mixed four-ball matches; and 12 singles matches. A total of 12½ points are needed to win the cup, out of the 24 possible points on the board.

Participants will also play a nine-hole, “Friendship Match” on Sept. 28, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., and be announced live during the 41st Ryder Cup Opening Ceremonies to a global audience on Sept. 29.

Abdulghany, who was USA Today’s national girls golfer of the year in 2015-16, earned an automatic berth to the team by finishing as the runner-up at the 2016 Junior PGA Championship. She is one of three Californians on the team.

Last year, Abdulghany became the first Orange County girls golfer to win the CIF State Championship. Her winning round of 2-under 69 is the lowest score posted by a woman at Poppy Hills, surpassing the old record by three strokes, and equaled the second-lowest score carded in the state tournament, which has been held 18 times.

Her effort made her the Register’s girls golfer of the year in 2015.
