Rob Cullinan is coming home, having been hired as the boys basketball coach at Mission Viejo High.

Athletic Director Troy Roelen confirmed the hiring Wednesday morning.

Cullinan, a 1992 Mission Viejo graduate, was the associate head coach at Dana Hills for the previous 12 years. Cullinan will be on campus as a history teacher.

“I’m beyond excited. This has been my dream job since I went to school,” said Cullinan, who played football, basketball and baseball for the Diablos and earned a football scholarship to University of the Pacific. “The opportunity was there at Mission Viejo, and I always preach to my students to follow their dreams and I followed mine.”

Cullinan has been a varsity head coach before – at Laguna Beach from 2001 to 2003.

Cullinan replaces Roelen, who resigned as coach in May because of a SaddlebackValley Unified School District policy that doesn’t allow a coach to serve as coach and athletic director at the same time. Roelen will remain as athletic director.

“Our campus is definitely better with the addition of Rob,” Roelen said.

Cullinan officially takes over Monday.
