IRVINE – Missing two key players and starting a freshman at quarterback, Crean Lutheran struggled for much of the game and lost to Excelsior Charter of Spring Valley Lake, 51-6, in a nonleague game Friday at Crean Lutheran.

The Saints (0-4), who were without starting running back/linebacker Isaiah Hobus and regular quarterback Adam Barrett, were held to 23 rushing yards.

Christopher Pimental went 7-of-13 passing for 82 yards and had a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:30 left.

But he threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns by the Eagles (3-0).

Excelsior essentially put the game out of reach in the second quarter, scoring on a 61-yard run by Matthew Marable that increased its lead to 25-0 with 3:53 left.

The Saints fell behind early, 12-0, but were on the verge of scoring when they put together a long first-quarter drive. They drove 73 yards before missing a 24-yard field goal attempt.

Crean's Mark Sharp gained 19 yards on 14 carries.

The Eagles' lead grew to 38-0 at halftime.
