All-County water polo players Carlee Kapana (Newport Harbor), sisters Makenzie and Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach) and Maddie Musselman (Corona del Mar) have been selected to the U.S. roster for the FINA Women’s Intercontinental tournament starting April 28 in New Zealand.
Former county standouts Courtney Mathewson (Canyon) and Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) also are on the squad along with San Marcos rising sophomore Paige Hauschild.
Kapana and Olympian Betesy Armstrong will be the goalies. Armstrong’s selection is intriguing because she retired last summer. She helped Team USA claim the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.
USA Water Polo spokesman Greg Mescall said Tuesday that Armstrong will serve as an emergency backup.
The U.S. team won’t be at full-strength in New Zealand because of the ongoing collegiate season. Kapana and Aria Fischer will be making their international debuts with the senior national team.
