With one of the biggest cross country meets in the country happening this past weekend – the Woodbridge Invitational – a lot of highlights came with it, and county athletes had their fair share.

Capistrano Valley’s Rebecca Deitch ran a 17:05, which was the best time of any county girl on the weekend. It was the 18th-best girls time overall.

Deitch’s teammate, Ashley Licata, ran a 17:07, which was the third-best time of any county girl.

The Cougars finished fifth overall in the girls team standings. Corona del Mar’s girls had the second-best finish of any county team at 20th. The Sea Kings were followed by San Clemente and Trabuco Hills.

Brea Olinda’s boys squad finished fourth overall. Canyon finished 11th.

Huntington Beach’s George Gleason had the second-best time for a county boy at the invitational with a 14:45. …

This week, many of the top runners in the county will take part in the Dana Hills Nike Invitational on Saturday. The first race is at 8 a.m.

                                                          GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Capistrano Valley captured the title at the Venice High Invitational on Saturday. Emily Horner was selected tournament MVP. Nicole Schumacher earned all-tournament honors, and Claire Quick (33 kills) also figured prominently for the Cougars. …

Santa Margarita posted the best finish among county schools at the 63-team Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas. The Eagles finished ninth, winning the Silver Division championship.

Other county teams and how they finished: Edison (18th), Villa Park (19th), Laguna Beach (22nd), Mater Dei (25th), Saddleback Valley Christian (33rd), El Dorado (39th), Los Alamitos (41st) and Beckman (43rd). …

One of the biggest matches of the week is in the Academy League. Sage Hill hosts St. Margaret’s on Friday. Their second league match will be at St. Margaret’s on Oct. 14.

                                                      BOYS WATER POLO

All of the teams in the Orange County boys water polo Top 10 will be in action this week at the South Coast Tournament, annually one of the top events of the regular season.

Defending tournament champion Mater Dei is seeded first followed by Loyola of Los Angeles, Laguna Beach and Foothill.

The matches will be played at Newport Harbor, Santa Margarita, Corona del Mar and Foothill, starting Thursday. The final is scheduled for Saturday at Newport Harbor at 4:05 p.m. …

Not all of the big matches this week will be in the South Coast Tournament. Today, No. 3 Huntington Beach plays host to No. 7 Servite while No. 4 Corona del Mar takes on Long Beach Wilson at the temporary pool at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. In the Sea View League today, Trabuco Hills plays host to Capistrano Valley in a duel of Division 3-ranked teams.

Tesoro senior Gordon Neale teamed with Brea Olinda senior Amy Lee in the afternoon fourball and lost, 3 and 1, to the European duo of John Axelsen and Emily Pederson on the opening day of the Junior Ryder Cup in Perthshire, Soctland. The USA holds a 71/2-41/2 lead in the competition, which concludes today. …

Foothill’s Emily Sumner got the second hole-in-one of her career last week at Tustin Ranch Golf Club, helping the Knights beat Canyon by 27 strokes. The two-year varsity player aced the 144-yard, par-3 No. 6 on her way to finishing with the 1-over-par 37. …

Troy and San Clemente, the No. 4 and No. 9 teams in the county, and defending CIF State Champions Torrey Pines will tee off Friday at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course in the Rainbow Sandals Invitational.

The tournament has become one of the premier regular-season events on the girls golf schedule, drawing some of the best teams from Southern California.
