Taking a look around Orange County high school sports:

Barry Turner, who died last week after a gave-it-hell fight with ALS, was not just a great soccer coach at Foothill. He also was outstanding in the class room at Hillview. Turner was Tustin Unified School District High School Teacher of the Year in 2002.

• One of the county’s better girls volleyball players this year, senior Haley Hodson, will not play for Corona del Mar. Hodson, twice selected to the All-County team and Stanford-bound, is on the USA Junior Women’s team, and that commitment precludes her from playing high school volleyball. Many national-level athletes in volleyball, soccer and other sports forgo playing high school sports to devote time to national programs.

• Three county girls volleyball teams are No. 1 in their CIF-SS divisions: Los Alamitos in Division 1AA; Aliso Niguel in Division 1A; and Troy in 2A.

• As usual, the girls volleyball rankings for 1AA has a good number of county teams in it. After Los Al at No. 1, Mater Dei is No. 2, Orange Lutheran is No. 4, Corona del Mar is No. 7 and Tesoro is No. 9. After Aliso Niguel in 1A, El Dorado is No. 2, Villa Park is No. 4 and Mission Viejo is No. 10.

• Brea Olinda is No. 1 in the CIF-SS boys cross country rankings in Division 3. The Wildcats are the only county team at No. 1in their division in boys or girls cross country.

• Brea boys cross country has junior Austin Tamagno. He is the best male distance runner in the county. By the time he graduates in 2016, Tamagno will be included in the discussion of the greatest in the county’s rich history of high school distance runners.

• It’s not known if he ever said “throw my son the dang ball.” Keyshawn Johnson this week did resign as receivers coach for Mission Viejo football when his namesake son withdrew from the school.

• Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson is not bitter that Keyshawn Johnson Jr. withdrew from school after one game in which the sophomore receiver caught one pass. “I wish ‘Key’ the best of luck,” he said. “I hope along the way the family makes good decisions.”

• Keyshawn Johnson Jr. would have to make a verified change of residence or be granted a hardship waiver from the CIF-Southern Section to become athletically eligible at Santa Margarita, where he enrolled Tuesday. The option to sit out 30 days of the season, taken by many transfers, is not available to Johnson because he has participated in interscholastic competition in the same sport in the same season.

• Mission Viejo goes into today’s Honor Bowl game at Oceanside with some bruises. Running back Tony Williams, who left last week’s game against Liberty of Bakersfield because of injury, is unavailable this week, and All-County defensive lineman Joe Babros is questionable. Babros was No. 35 and Williams was No. 41 on the OC Varsity Hot 150, a list of the county’s top players.

• The Orange County Chapter of the National Football Foundation seeks new members, needs past members to rejoin and asks football fans in the business community for support. At its Scholar Awards Banquet, the chapter grants thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to county football players who are all-league first team while maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or better for high school student-athletes, 3.3 or better for community college and Chapman University players. For information, go to nationalfootballfoundation-occhapter.com or call 714-746-0922.

• The San Clemente-Huntington Beach football game is today at Huntington Beach High. We had it as a Thursday game (mark that “E-Fryer” on your scorecards). It has a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

• JSerra’s football team is in the state top 25 for the first time. The Lions are No. 22 in the CalHiSports.com rankings.

• Mater Dei and Servite flipped positions in the CalHiSports.com state top 25. Mater Dei, No. 4 last week, is No. 3 and Servite went from No. 3 to No. 4. St. John Bosco is No. 1 and De La Salle of Concord is No. 2.

Oceanside, Mission Viejo’s opponent today, is No. 16 in California.

• Three county football teams are No. 1 in their CIF-SS divisions: St. Margaret’s in the East Valley Division; Garden Grove, Southern Division; and Corona del Mar in the Southwest Division. Mater Dei is No 2, behind St. John Bosco, in the Pac-5 Division. Mission Viejo is the highest-ranked county team in the West Valley Division at No. 3.

• The CIF-Southern Section Record Book can be downloaded for no cost at cifss.org. The record book tab is at the lower right corner of the page. The book includes team and individual records for all sports, and CIF-SS and state champions and the sports’ athletes of the year.

• Also available for download at cifss.org is the CIF-SS constitution of by-laws and rulings, known as “The Blue Book.” Spend 30 minutes reading it and you will have studied it more than a good percentage of county coaches.
