Costa Mesa routs Godinez
COSTA MESA Todd Davis said he had so much time to pass when he dropped back behind center Friday, he didn’t know what to do with it.
Turns out Costa Mesa’s senior quarterback had no trouble figuring it out, throwing for a career-high 304 yards and five touchdowns — all but 8 yards in the first half — and adding a rushing score as the Mustangs routed Godinez, 42-6, in an Orange Coast League football game at Estancia High.
“Their defense was easy to read,” said Davis, who lifted Costa Mesa (5-3, 2-0) to its third consecutive victory.
Davis’ attack began with the Mustangs trailing, 6-0, after Rene Pena’s early 84-yard touchdown run for the Grizzlies (2-6, 0-2).
He capped the next three Costa Mesa drives with short scoring passes to Christian Rangel, Luis Gomez and Brian Waldron.
In the closing minutes of the half, a 71-yard strike from Davis to Waldron (six catches, 144 yards), who outleaped a cornerback and took off down the left sideline, was followed by a 65-yard connection between Davis and Josh Emo (three catches, 103 yards), who had told Coach Jeremy Osso before the play to note that no one was lining up inside to defend him on his routes.
Davis added a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before being pulled.
