LOS ANGELES – It took Santa Margarita three quarters to paint a masterpiece on Tuesday night.

It took them one quarter to nearly ruin it. Then it took an overtime period for them to salvage it.

The Eagles kept their cool after blowing an 18-point second-half lead, and outlasted Cathedral of Los Angeles to claim an 86-76 overtime win in a Division 3 Southern California Regional semifinal at Cathedral.

“I think you play in the Trinity League – and not taking away anything from (Cathedral’s) league – and it prepares you for the playoffs,” Santa Margarita coach Jeff Reinert said. “And our point guard was fabulous. He picked up his fourth (foul) and stayed in the game. That was the difference in the game.”

Devonte Klines’ shot wasn’t falling – his first make from the field didn’t come until overtime – but he made numerous plays for his teammates as he posted 11 assists.

Klines had five points in the extra period, and Joe Furstinger scored six of his 21 points to help the Eagles advance to the Southern California Regional Finals, where they’ll face Chaminade, on Saturday.

Ray Shou came up big for Santa Margarita (26-8) as he hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points. Shou and Sjur Berg, who sank a number of big free throws and went to work on the glass, played a large role in the win for the Eagles.
