Putting together a schedule is easy for coaches in some sports.

There are your nonleague games, and then your league competition.

For teams like the Foothill boys lacrosse team, there’s no league competition, as the Knights compete as an Independent.

So the goal for putting the schedule is simple for Coach Jon Fox.

“We want to play as tough a schedule as possible,” Fox said. “We’re trying to play a champion every week, whether that’s a league, section or state champion.”

That’s especially true in the coming weeks.

Foothill faces Loyola of Los Angeles on Saturday, March 11, at noon. The Cubs won the Southern Section title last year.

Foothill will host The Woodlands School (Texas) on Monday, March 13, Sunset League champion Newport Harbor on Wednesday, March 15, and then the Knights visit defending Orange County champion Corona del Mar on Saturday, March 18.

“It makes it exciting,” Fox said. “It gets you experience for down the stretch in the playoffs when you’re playing those tough teams. It is a great opportunity.”

Every two years, Foothill travels back east for competition. This year, the team will be heading to Baltimore for three games during the school’s spring break, April 10-14. That trip serves several purposes for the Knights.

“It gives them a wider experience of the sports and a different perspective,” Fox said. “Being able to get on the road is also a great time for team bonding and helping form a strong team connection.”

The Knights will also face the gauntlet of San Diego teams later this season, taking on Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon and Poway. The Foothill schedule includes Wheat Ridge of Colorado, Santa Margarita, San Clemente and Palos Verdes.

The Knights this season are a bit inexperienced. They graduated 15 seniors from last year’s roster, but the results so far have been perfect.

“They work hard and they care for each other,” Fox said. “They want to play well and represent the great tradition of Foothill. This is a great chance for the next generation to play.

“The next two weeks will give a good statement where we’re at the rest of this season.”
