CIF-SS BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

DIVISION 2AA

COLONY OF ONTARIO (26-5) VS. VILLA PARK (23-5)

Where, when: Honda Center, Saturday, 11:15 a.m.

Outlook: Villa Park is trying for its first CIF-SS boys basketball championship. The Spartans have been to finals before – they are 0 for 5 in section championship games, with their latest loss in the 2014 1A final. Villa Park went 6-0 in the North Hills League. In the playoffs, the third-seeded Spartans had a first-round bye then defeated Westlake in the second round, Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo in the quarterfinals and Highland in the semifinals. Villa Park’s top players are brothers Myles Franklin, a senior, and sophomore Julian Franklin. Senior guard Caleb Banuelos has made several clutch shots for the Spartans. Colony went 10-0 in the Mt. Baldy League to win its 11th straight league title. The Titans, seeded No. 1 in the division, had a first-round bye before they defeated Cypress in the second round, St. Joseph of Santa Maria in the quarterfinals and Cajon in the semifinals. Colony takes a 14-game win streak into this game. Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds is impressed by the Titans. “They’re super athletic,” he said. “They run their stuff really well and they love to put pressure on you.” It won’t be the final game of the season for either team. By advancing to a CIF-SS championship game, Colony and Villa Park are entered in the state tournament.
