Kickoff 2012: Beckman preview
Last season record: 11-3 overall, 5-0 in Pacific Coast League (first)
Postseason: The Patriots lost to Corona del Mar, 14-13, in the CIF Southern Division finals.
Coach: Ken Mushinskie (second year, 11-3).
Home stadium: Tustin
Outlook: The Patriots won the Pacific Coast League title last year but lost a number of talented players from that team, including quarterback Cameron Biedgoly, running back Jeff Kim, wide receiver/linebacker James Kaprielian, defensive back Elijah Steen, tackle Khodadad Kia and offensive lineman/linebacker Bryan Dewey, the MVP of the Pacific Coast League. Beckman has a young group with just five returning starters, so there are plenty of question marks entering the season. Quinn O’Dell, a junior, is scheduled to start at quarterback, but he joins the team with limited varsity experience. Beckman has been to the CIF finals the past two years, coming up short both times.
Factoid: Beckman won the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the top football team in Irvine, last year.

PLAYERS TO WATCH |

Chase Ferguson, Sr.: Ferguson will play offensive and defensive line for the Patriots. “We are relying on Chase to be a major component of our team this year on both sides of the ball,” said Coach Ken Mushinskie. “He is a returning defensive end who contributed significantly last year and he has added size and strength in the off-season. Chase will also play an important role on the offensive line where he can use his long reach and height to his advantage.” |

Kosta Fujita, Sr.: Fujita will anchor the middle of the Patriots’ defense, Mushinskie said. “He is a hard-hitting, up-tempo player with great instincts and a knack for finding the football. He is also a downhill linebacker and a sure tackler who plays 100 percent all the time. Kosta also has very good hands so we will utilize him in the slot on offense this year.” |
