Joe Tagaloa was promoted to football head coach at Segerstrom, the school announced today.

Tagaloa, 36, served as a varsity football assistant coach at Segerstrom since 2006, the year the school opened. As head coach he replaces Mike Maceranka, who departed to become football head coach at Laguna Hills. Maceranka was Segerstrom’s first and only football head coach until Tagaloa replaced him.

Tagaloa has craved a football head coaching opportunity.

“When I first started coached, I said ‘one of these days I’m going to be a head coach,’” Tagaloa said today. “It seems like everything fell into place for me now.”

He also has been a football assistant coach at Santa Ana and Garden Grove.

Tagaloa was a standout running back at Saddleback and also played at Santa Ana College and University of San Diego.

Segerstrom in 2015 finished 8-3-1 overall and was 5-0 in the Golden West League. The Jaguars have won league championships in five of the past seven seasons.
