Paul Chiotti, who guided Sonora to the second round of the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs in the fall, said Friday that he has resigned after 10 seasons.

“I’ve been doing this for 10 years here at Sonora (and) 21 years total coaching, and I’ve got a wife and three kids and the kids are growing,” he said. “I made this decision to step down to spend more time with the family.”

Chiotti led Sonora (9-3) to a third-place finish in the Freeway League last season and a first-round playoff victory at Tustin. Sonora lost in the second round to San Clemente, 52-45.

Sonora reached the playoffs five times under Chiotti, including a run to the Southwest semifinals in 2010. His overall record was 52-55.

“It was a good run for this school,” he said.

Chiotti was an assistant at Brea Olinda for 11 years before arriving at Sonora. He will remain a teacher at Sonora and will coach track.
