Top O.C. recruits headed to Nike Regional
Many of Orange County’s top high school football recruits in the class of 2016 are expected to participate Sunday in the Nike Football Opening Regional at Redondo High in Redondo Beach.
The half-day event, formerly known as the Nike Football Training Camp, offers position-specific training along with drills and one-on-one competition.
The camp’s preliminary roster was packed with county prospects, including several quarterbacks.
Santa Margarita quarterback KJ Costello (6-5, 218), the county’s No. 1-ranked recruit for 2016, could be one of the recruits to watch Sunday along with Tesoro quarterback Devon Modster (6-2, 190).
Modster recently added offers from Washington State and UNLV, Titans coach Matt Poston said.
Costello’s new target, transfer receiver Dylan Crawford, was on the preliminary roster along with Mater Dei junior outside linebacker Curtis Robinson and Mater Dei offensive lineman Frank Martin.
Sunday’s event will be part of the selection process for Nike’s The Opening Finals in July in Oregon.
Joe Silvey was hired this week as the football coach at Trabuco Hills, replacing Tony Henney.
Silvey was the Mustangs’ defensive coordinator on this past season’s CIF-Southern Section championship team. He was defensive coordinator at Santa Margarita from 1994 to 2000.
Henney resigned in February to become the head coach at Westlake of Westlake Village. ...
Brendan Chambers was promoted this week to head coach at Saddleback Valley Christian. Chambers, a former All-CIF quarterback for the Warriors, was an assistant coach for the team the past three seasons. ...
Todd Rusinkovich resigned this week as head coach at Dana Hills, which he led for four seasons. The Dolphins were 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the South Coast League in 2014. ...
Buena Park coach Anthony White will be one of the coaches for the 605 All-Star Game on June 6. The game will be played at Cerritos College and will pit Orange County vs. Los Angeles County.
