The high school football season officially kicks off tonight for Orange County’s teams as Edison makes its debut against Baldwin of Wailuku in Maui.

Edison opened its 2011 season with a 48-10 victory over Baldwin in Maui.

The contest at War Memorial Stadium begins at 9 p.m. PST.

COMMITMENTS

Mission Viejo offensive lineman Cole Smith (6-3, 275) committed to USC, Diablos football coach Bob Johnson said.

Smith, a senior center and the son of former Rams star center Doug Smith, was a first-team All-County selection last season.

Johnson said Smith had narrowed his choices to USC, UCLA and Stanford.

Mater Dei is No. 18 and Servite No. 19 in USA Today’s preseason national rankings. St. John Bosco is No. 2. Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman, which plays Servite on Friday at Cerritos College, is No. 1.

HONORS

Former El Modena football coach Bob Lester will be inducted into the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame on Oct. 23. Lester coached the Vanguards to three CIF titles.
