SAN CLEMENTE – Missing one of the top girls golfers in the nation, Corona del Mar couldn’t hold off San Clemente on Tuesday at Talega Golf Club, and the No. 5 Tritons handed the No. 3 Sea Kings their first loss of the season, 193-209.

Madi Wiedeman shot an even-par 35 in the nonleague match to lead the Tritons (5-3) and share medalist honors with Corona del Mar senior Amy Matsuoka.

Olivia French and Isabella Seeburger also broke 40 for San Clemente, carding a 36 and 37, respectively. The Tritons have finished in the 190s in four of their eight matches.

“We have a good strong top six, and if we all play well, we can all shoot in the 30s,” Seeburger said. “Since my freshman year, this is the best team that we have had, I think. The goal is to win league and CIF.”

The Sea Kings (8-1) played their third consecutive match without Alyaa Abdulghany, who is No. 11 in the AJGA Polo national rankings. This week, she is in Germany competing in the Faldo Series Grand Final at the Sporting Club Berlin. She is tied for second in the tournament after opening with a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday.

Last week, she represented the United States in the World Junior Girls Championship in Canada.

“I am just so happy for her. What a great opportunity for her,” San Clemente coach Mike Hurlbut said. “I wish they would have been at full strength, because it probably would have come down to the sixth player.”
