The CIF-Southern Section Council meets Wednesday to vote on a proposal that would expand the number of teams participating in the state football championships.

The proposal would allow all division championships in all 10 CIF sections to advance to the state playoffs. All 13 teams that win CIF-Southern Section championships would be eligible for the state playoffs, with the option to not accept the opportunity.

This past season, 18 of the state’s 51 section championships played in the CIF state playoffs. All 51 would be eligible if the proposal is passed at the CIF State Federated Council meeting this weekend.

The CIF-SS Council will vote Wednesday to send its State Federated Council representation to either support the proposal or to vote against the proposal.

Teams that do not want to play in the state playoffs would have to make that intention known to their section commissioner before the second week of their section playoffs, according to the proposal.

Also to be voted upon is a proposal that would require baseball and softball base coaches to wear helmets.

Up for discussion, and not a vote at this CIF-SS Council session, is a potential expansion of the CIF State girls volleyball championships from eight teams to 16; and a change in the language for what is the definition of competing for a non-high school team during the athlete’s season of sport.

The latter was generated by the suspensions of girls volleyball players who played in a sand volleyball tournament during their season, action that was interpreted to be outside competition. The proposal is meant to clarifty the CIF-SS rule.

The Council is the rules-making body of the CIF-Southern Section. The Federated Council has the same duties on the CIF State level.
