Ted Mullen, who coached Foothill and Villa Park to CIF football championships, died today. He was 81.

Mullen, widely known as “Moon,” coached at Villa Park from 1970-78 and at Foothill from 1981-86. He had briefer stints at Anaheim and University.

He accumulated 152 wins in 18 seasons of coaching football in the county.

Mullen coached Villa Park to a CIF title in 1977 and led Foothill to a CIF crown in 1981. His Villa Park teams were CIF runnersup in 1975 and ’76. His ’83 Foothill and ’87 Anaheim teams also lost in CIF finals.

Villa Park qualified for the playoffs six straight years under Mullen. Foothill made the playoffs in all six of Mullen’s seasons there. His CIF playoffs record is 31-12.

Mullen was inducted into the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame last year.
