Open Division added to CIF-SS basketball playoffs

OCVARSITY.COM

The CIF-Southern Section has approved the addition of an Open Division for the boys and girls basketball playoffs starting with the 2013-14 season.

There will be as many as 16 teams in the Open Division. Teams ranked in the top 10 for their division at the end of the season will be eligible for selection by a committee.

“We believe the Open Division will showcase the most elite teams drawn from every league in the section,” Rob Wigod, CIF-SS commissioner of athletics, said in a statement Thursday.

First-round winners in the Open Division will be guaranteed a berth in the CIF state playoffs. First-round losers will be put in a consolation bracket. The winner of the consolation bracket is guaranteed a state playoff berth. The other participants will need to apply for a state berth.

The selection committee includes current and former representatives of the CIF-SS Executive Committee, CIF-SS Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee, SCIBCA Executive Board, CIF State Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee and media members.
