HUNTINGTON BEACH – Edison was out to make a statement in its first Sunset League game.

The message: A recent two-game skid was nothing to worry about.

Edison strengthened its case for being a prime threat to win the Sunset League by crushing Marina, 63-6, Friday night in the teams’ league opener at Huntington Beach High.

The Chargers (4-2, 1-0) suffered losses to No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 Servite the last two weeks, but their homecoming game proved to be the perfect remedy to get back in the win column.

Chargers fans had every reason to be happy as Edison buried the Vikings (0-6, 0-1) early. Jacob Marines ran for two touchdowns and AJ Beynon caught a pair of Matt Gane TD passes as the Chargers rolled to a 49-0 lead at halftime.

Manase Time, Shane Davis, Turner Maza and Tommy Mang added rushing scores for Edison.

Braydon Wilson (two sacks), Time (one sack and two tackles for a loss) and Sharky Reza (interception) led the Chargers defense, which did not allow a first down in the first half.

“We just wanted to start out fresh and execute the game plan the coaches gave us,” Time said. “It all started the first play of the game.”

The Chargers defense racked up six sacks while holding Marina to 15 yards of total offense.

Kevin Vasquez’s 11-yard run gave the Vikings their initial first down at the 6:15 mark of the third quarter.

Quarterback Nolan Winks scored Marina’s lone touchdown on an 18-yard scramble late in the fourth quarter. Justin Hardy reeled in five catches.

The Vikings’ highlights on defense were Jacob Lopez’s two tackles in the backfield and a sack by Blaine Riederich.

The Sunset League race will heat up next week when the Chargers take on Huntington Beach. A fired-up Dave White was preaching revenge to his team after Friday’s game.

“We’ve got a big game with Huntington next week,” the Chargers coach said. “They are defending CIF champs. They got us last time, so we have to try to get them back.”
