The inaugural CIF state swimming and diving championships have been awarded to Clovis West High, starting May 22-23 in 2015, and in 2016 and 2017, said Erin Davenport, director for the CIF state.
Clovis West was selected from a bid group that consisted of Clovis North High and Riverside City College, site of the CIF-Southern Section finals since 2012.
The format for the championships hasn’t been finalized, but Davenport said each section will receive automatic qualifiers.
The Southern Section will have the most automatic qualifiers per swimming event with five and the most automatic qualifiers in diving with six boys and six girls, she said.
The state championships also will feature at-large qualifiers, Davenport said.
The Clovis area also plays host to the state championships in track and field and cross country.
The Southern Section generated the proposal to create the swimming and diving championships.
