CIF STATE BOYS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Where/when: San Gabriel Country Club, Wednesday, first tee time 7:30 a.m.

Outlook: Mater Dei is making its first appearance in the tournament after finishing third in the SCGA Southern California Championship on Monday in Pasadena. The Monarchs will be looking to become the first Orange County team to win the state championship since Sunny Hills in 2008. It will also be the last match for Mater Dei coach Ollie Martin, who will be retiring at the end of the season. Depth is clearly the Monarchs’ strength as three players have posted the low score in their past three postseason tournaments. Senior Jacob Biss posted a 1-under-par 71 at Brookside Golf Club on Monday. Westlake of Westlake Village will be the favorite today after winning the SCGA qualifier and So Cal Regional championship. The Warriors’ scoring average in those two tournaments is 73.9.
