Canyon takes the big-play approach to victory

ORANGE – The Canyon football used all of its speed, and it came up with big plays on offense and defense en route to a 42-21 nonleague victory over Fullerton in the season opener for both schools Friday at El Modena High.Tubotein Taylor rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on five carries, and Jared Gobert had 93 yards and a touchdown on eight carries to lead the Comanches’ ground attack.
Scott Terrel keyed Canyon’s defense with two interceptions, and Colton Grandbouche had a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown.
“Offensively, we had the big plays,” Canyon coach Brent McKee said. “We have a lot of speed.”
Gobert scored on runs of 43 and 72 yards.
The 43-yard score came on the senior’s first touch of the season and gave Canyon (1-0) a 7-0 lead.
Fullerton’s Michael Alain, who led all rushers with 179 yards on 31 carries, countered answered with a 42-yard touchdown run to tie the score.
Canyon led, 21-13, in the third quarter when Allain scored what appeared to be a potential tying touchdown on a 26-yard run.
However, a holding penalty nullified the score and Canyon stopped Fullerton (0-1) on the drive.
The Indians never got closer.
