OCVarsity’s preview of Thursday night’s Southern Division playoff game.
(Previews for Friday’s games will be online Thursday evening.)
SOUTHERN DIVISION
Canyon (5-5) vs. Calvary Chapel (7-3)
Where, when: Estancia High, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: It has been a wild week for the Comanches. They were the top-ranked team in the division, then had to forfeit a victory and eventually finished tied for third in the North Hills League, before receiving one of the at-large berths into the playoffs. Canyon advanced to the semifinals last year. The offensive trio of quarterback Jason Harman, running back Charlie Treanor and wide receiver Trace Hobbs has the experience and talent that makes Canyon one of the favorites in the division. Calvary Chapel went 5-0 in the Orange Coast League. The Eagles boast a strong offensive core with quarterback Patrick Glasgow, running back Braeden Stack and wide receivers Luke Thompson and Josh Debernarde. On defense, Canyon should have the edge, with Avery Jones, Blake Suttle and Christian Araiza leading the way.
Prediction: Canyon
