Villa Park’s girls swim team needed to capture the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay or finish second-third in the race to beat rival Canyon on Wednesday.

The Spartans narrowly missed taking first but accomplished the latter to secure an 87-83 victory in a Century League meet at Canyon.

The Comanches’ 400 free relay touched first in 3 minutes, 53.28 seconds, but Villa Park used a strong anchor by Sheila Karimi to finish second in a season-best 3:51.31. The junior blazed a 53.88 anchor leg.

Villa Park’s B relay placed third in 4:07.58 to help the Spartans improve to 4-1 in league. Canyon fell to 2-2.

Karimi also claimed the 50 (24.59) and 100 (54.07) freestyles in season-best times.

Villa Park’s boys defeated Canyon, 98-72, to move to 4-1 in league. Max Ketterer swept the 50 (22.14) and 100 (48.74) freestyles to remain undefeated in the sprints in league.
