DeShaun Foster will hold his third annual Challenger Flag Football Camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Edison High.

The camp, which is sponsored by the Orange Empire Conference, is for those between 5 and 21 years of age who have special needs.

Foster, the running back who starred at Tustin High before going on to UCLA, the Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers, has worked with the Special Olympics previously and enjoys outreach opportunities.

“My mom’s really big in the community,” said Foster, who now serves as a graduate assistant under Jim Mora at UCLA. “It’s something she raised me and my little sister to do.”

Campers will learn basic football skills and will play in a flag football game at the end of the session. Also available is the Challenger Cheerleading Camp, where campers will learn basic cheerleading skills.

“It gives them the opportunity to do something other children are allowed to do,” Foster said of the camp. “It’s just kind of fun to be around football from another perspective.”

While it isn’t necessarily the type of football practice he is used to, Foster gets a unique satisfaction out of running such a camp. Watching a young child catch his first pass of the day is an experience that sticks with him.

“It’s amazing,” the six-year NFL player said. “To know that he’s excited, that’s what’s fun.”
