IRVINE- The extra point Jae Byun blocked in the first quarter didn’t seem like a big deal, but it proved to be the difference as Sunny Hills scored late and stunned University, 7-6, in a nonleague game at Irvine High.Byun’s block and a key interception, the efforts of quarterback Johnny Nguyen, running back Elliot Colby and defensive lineman Danilo Nam, made a winner of Lancers coach Marcello Giuliano on the field where he used to play and coach at Irvine High.
“These kids play so hard,” Giuliano said. “We should not have won that game, and they just found a way. They do not quit.”
University (4-2), ranked fifth in the CIF Southern Division, outgained Sunny Hills (3-2), 273 yards to 97, in the game.
But the Lancers turned Byun’s interception in the fourth quarter into a 10-play, 57-yard drive that was finished off on a 1-yard dive into the end zone by Colby with 2:45 left.
Nam, filling in for the team’s normal kicker, booted the extra point for the victory.
