BUENA PARK– Cain Flores scored four touchdowns and Ricky Verdugo added two touchdown receptions as Buena Park ended a 17-game on-field losing streak, shutting out visiting Bassett, 40-0, in a season opener Friday at Buena Park High.

"It's about these guys and the work they put in," said Coyotes coach Rob Ryan. "After last year, we didn't want to experience so many losses. The first step was right here. I'm proud of these kids."

Verdugo keyed Buena Park's opening 86-yard, eight play scoring drive with a 37-yard reception on third down. Flores scored two plays later on a 16-yard run. On the ensuing Bassett possession, a Verdugo interception at the Olympian 32 was cashed in when Cain scored on a 1-yard dive.

Quarterback Dylan Brazil later connected with Verdugo on touchdown receptions of 17 and 59 yards.

Bassett's best scoring chance in the first half was thwarted when a fourth down pass was intercepted by Flores, who returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to give Buena Park a 26-0 lead.
