Bryson ignites Brethren Christian
HUNTINGTON BEACH – A key first-half special teams play and strong defensive were more than enough for Brethren Christian as the Warriors earned a 28-8 nonleague victory over Grace Brethren of Simi Valley on Friday night at Ocean View High.
Grace Brethren (2-2) scored late in the half on a Matthew Woodard quarterback sneak from the 1.
But Warriors junior Brandon Bryson provided his team with momentum when he took the ensuing kickoff and broke off a 90-yard return as time expired in the second quarter to give his team a 21-8 lead.
To start the third quarter, Brethren Christian (1-1) went to work quickly on offense and extended its lead as freshman Jason Fuga finished a seven-play drive with a 5-yard rushing score to put the Warriors up, 28-8.
Fuga finished with 90 yards on 14carries.
The Warriors defense allowed just 170 yards and held Woodard to 6-of-17 passing for 44 yards.
Brethren Christian recorded three sacks by Guy Demazelier, Robert Briones and Josh Gladysz.
Before the Brethren Christian crowd could get settled into its seats, the defense set the tone as cornerback Anthony Moore intercepted Woodard's first pass and returned it 57yards for a 6-0 lead, 50 seconds into the game.
Senior quarterback Jack McInally was solid, completing 14 of 28 passes for 223 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
His touchdown came in the first quarter when he found freshman Austin Gorrell for the 26-yard score, giving the Warriors a 13-0 lead.
